Push to talk "not working" — here's the fix
You're not blind: there is no setting literally named "Push to Talk". Voice defaults to open/toggle transmission, and the binding you want is hiding under a different name.
The fix — confirmed still accurate at launch
- Open Settings → Controls.
- Find "Radio channel On/Off" — this is the voice transmit toggle. Rebind it to a comfortable key and use it as your PTT/mute switch. Community-confirmed in the "PUSH TO TALK" Steam thread ("the name is misleading, but it's there") — a player replying on launch day confirmed the setting is still at this exact location in the shipped build.
- Controller: default transmit is LB / left bumper (Xbox layout).
Launch-day bug: voice keys stop responding mid-session. Multiple players report the transmit bind working for the first match or two, then silently failing — no crash, mic just stops transmitting until you rejoin. One player:
"worked for like 2 games and then just stopped... spent the last 2 hours trying to find a fix"; another:
"sometimes it works but in toggle mode, not push to talk. And sometimes it doesnt." Reports cross two independent communities the same day — Steam (
"In game voice chat keys not working") and Reddit (
r/HellLetLooseVietnam, "Anyone else's voice chat not working?" / "voip not working? or a quiet bunch?"). If it happens to you, the community workaround is leaving and rejoining the server, or Options → Audio → VOIP Disconnect/Reconnect.
Update: Team17's own Aug 12 known-issues blog officially confirms a related bug — proximity chat audio can sound distorted/robotic (already fixed in Squad/Leadership chat, still being worked on for proximity), and a squad losing its Squad Leader stops being heard in proximity chat entirely. That's a plausible official-side explanation for some of these reports; a fix is in progress with their VOIP partner. Full list on the
voice chat page.
Why it feels broken
The HLL series routes voice by channel (local / unit / command radio), so the binding is named after the radio channel, not "push to talk". If your mic seems always-hot in proximity chat, check the voice activation/toggle mode in Audio settings too. The naming confusion made it through to launch unchanged — it was one of the loudest playtest complaints (17+ separate threads) and the shipped build didn't rename or relocate the setting.
Waiting on a fix and stuck without a mic? Fire missions still work if you can type the numbers — our
mortar & artillery calculator turns two grid references into range, azimuth and elevation in one line, short enough to paste into chat.
